Dental implants have a significant advantage over traditional methods for fixing gaps in teeth. There are cases where conventional treatment methods are not advisable, and sometimes the patient doesn’t want to receive conventional fixed dentures. These are the highly recommended treatments for patients who do not have enough bone density in the jaw to support conventional implants. The installation of these smaller tooth replacements can greatly help to improve your smile.

What is a mini dental implant?

These teeth implants are made similarly to the standard implants treatment which is titanium alloy. However, these are smaller than the regular treatment. It mainly consists of titanium posts with a precision attachment (ball) secured on the exterior part. After it is screwed to the jaw, the bone grows and integrates over it for six months. Proper restoration treatment is then fitted to the precision attachment by using a socket and rubber o-ring.

What’s different from mini dental implants is the size. The diameters range from 1.8 mm to 3.3 mm while regular implants are from 3.4 to 5.8 mm in diameter. Another difference is that this smaller prosthetic contains a two-piece structure whereas the standard version is a three-piece structure. The standard implants have abutments applied to the body separately. These can be installed in one visit using local anesthesia to numb the pain. It is rarely needed to have sutures when you get mini implants.

Am I a candidate for Mini dental implant?

This type of treatment works best in cases where conventional treatments cannot be used for various reasons. You can benefit from this treatment if you do not want to or cannot receive traditional treatment methods such as conventional implants, fixed bridges, upper or lower fixed dentures, and other methods of replacing your missing teeth. There are some cases in which patients will need such treatment such as when the patient has:

  • Insufficient Bone Density – The success of the treatment depends on the quality of the remaining jaw bone. When the quality and quantity of the remaining jawbone are not enough, then there is a high chance the artificial roots won’t last long. However, if the jawbone is dense enough, the treatment will last for almost a lifetime.
  • Unfit for Surgical Procedures to Enhance Bone Quality – In some cases, your dentist will perform several surgical procedures to attempt to improve the quality of the residual jawbone. Some of these procedures include alveoplasty and bone augmentation. However, if the patient suffers from any type of malignancy, or chronic illness, then they are not fit for such procedures. In this case, the patient can undergo mini restorations that do not require as much bone density for proper functionality and implant retention.
  • Insufficient Space Available – When the natural tooth is lost, the opening of the teeth will gradually grow into the vacant space. When this happens, it is not possible to place conventional treatment into the smaller space; instead, mini versions that are shorter can be placed, fitting it very easily, keeping the space filled, and prevents shifting.
